The Hand of the King, or highest official, is a position that Westeros' King Robert Baratheon wants his old friend Eddard, Lord Stark, to fill.
Eddard accepts after being inadvertently informed that the previous Hand was slain in order to carry out more research. The Lannisters, the relatives of the Queen, might be devising a scheme to seize control in the meantime.
