The show takes place 97 years after a cataclysmic nuclear conflict that virtually eliminated all life on Earth. The inhabitants of the twelve space stations that were in Earth's orbit before the conflict are the only known survivors. Together, the space stations formed a single, enormous station known as "The Ark," where 2,400 people live. Resources are limited, and all offences, regardless of their seriousness or type, are penalised by death ("floating"), unless the offender is under the age of 18.
One hundred adolescent inmates are labelled "expendable" and transported to Earth's surface in a last-ditch effort to see if it is once again habitable after the Ark's life support systems are discovered to be seriously failing.
