IMF agent Ethan Hunt is training agents in place of working in the field because he is in a relationship with Julia, whom he hopes to marry and lead a normal life with. However, an IMF big shot and his friend Billy Musgrave tells him that an agent he trained is being held captive by an arms dealer. She is killed by a remote after Ethan chooses to save her and succeeds in doing so due to a dead man's switch implanted in her. High ranking IMF official Brassel reprimands both Ethan and Musgrave for their actions when Ethan returns. Ethan makes the unorthodox decision to bring in the arms dealer.
