Sent by his mother to seek a better life, young Merlin arrives at Camelot and is assigned as an apprentice to Gaius, the oppressive King Uther's physician. When Gaius learns that Merlin possesses magical telekinetic abilities, he agrees to preserve the boy's secret since Uther, who believes all magic is wicked, has rendered it punishable by death. Under the guise of a lovely maiden, the mother of a sorcerer named Uther who was recently put to death travels to Camelot to get retribution and sings the court to sleep. The only person who notices what is going on is Merlin, who manages to avert disaster while remaining conscious and hidden as a warlock. He receives a promotion to valet status as a reward from Uther's conceited son Arthur.
