A failure occurs in two of the sleep chambers of Starship Avalon, a spacecraft carrying 5,259 passengers on a 120-year journey to a far-off colony planet called the "Homestead Colony". Consequently, two hibernation pods prematurely open, leaving Jim Preston (played by Chris Pratt) and Aurora Dunn (played by Jennifer Lawrence) trapped on the starship ninety years from their intended destination.
