Naval Captain Jonas Taylor, a skilled diver, had to evacuate half of his crew five years ago when he came upon an unidentified threat in the Mariana Trench's uncharted depths.
Even though he was dishonoredly discharged after the tragic incident, his unfounded and ludicrous claims that a 70-foot sea creature that had been thought to be extinct for over a million years had attacked his vessel were what ultimately cost him his career, his marriage, and any semblance of honor.
He is the one who receives the call, though, when a submersible that is transporting his ex-wife is submerged and disabled at the bottom of the ocean.
